Serena is Good at Taking Care of Other Living Things
There’s no voicemail from Serena or message from her about her talent. That’s because as of this week Serena is no longer with us.
I met Serena about a year ago. We never became super close but we talked and learned about each other while hanging out with mutual friends. She was soft spoken and had a lot going on but one thing that will always stick with me is that she was great with animals.
One day I was hanging out with her and a bunch of other people in a group, all talking and chilling—Serena was in the corner being kinda quiet. I kept hearing a tiny squeak and thought it was a chair or someone’s shoe. It turns out she wearing a sweatshirt that was two sizes too big for her and had a tiny kitten tucked into the crook of her elbow. She was caring for this itty bitty creature—carefully cradling it in her arms and keeping it calm but for the occasional little squeak. I’ll never forget that image of her being so good with that little delicate thing.
I found out this week that she was gone and I found out that our birthdays are only a day apart. I wish I had been able to talk with her more. Serena left us too soon but she left a mark on those around her that will never wash away.
I'm not selling prints of Serena yet. When I do, a percentage of all sales will go to support an organization that assists women in need.
