I couldn’t record any audio with Chris. We were sitting in CAPA High School on New Year’s Eve and there was a brilliant Afro-Caribbean dance and drumming performance happening right behind us so turning on the recorder was impossible. Instead, while she talked, I drew this image of her.
Chris is new to film-making but took to it like a duck to water. She had bobbed around at a bunch of jobs she liked but didn’t love for a long time before taking a class and now she is travelling to Cuba to film a documentary about Cuban music and it’s influence here in Pittsburgh. My favorite part of her sharing her talent was the emphasis on letting the people around her tell the story. She wants to capture it, not dictate it. It made me think about how a story unfolds and all she needs to do is watch and learn.
It’s Good to Be Back
I spent a lot of time working on other things over the holidays and it’s nice to begin feeling normal in a regular routine. I’ve made a few changes to my art practice in the past couple weeks but excited for another year and the journey to 800 portraits. See y’all around the Internet.
